Society must stop giving benefits to illegal immigrants

They would become a huge additional burden to our social services system.Who will pay for it? How will we then finance Social Security and health care for our citizens? How will we take care of our poor?Advocates for illegal immigrants say such people are essential to our economy because we are short of workers.I don’t believe it. I believe many job positions are not filled only because wages are too low; therefore, only people who are here illegally are willing to take those jobs. This is shameful exploitation! My fourth problem with compassion toward illegal immigrants is that if an economy stands on exploitation, it is a moral disaster. When one group — illegal immigrants — is exploited, another group — shameless employers — flourishes. The third group — average taxpayers — subsidizes it.

Slacker Guys and Striver Girls (81)

Males and females dont fit into those little boxes so easily. Even a man with three masters degrees has got to be a shade more complex than the label slacker affords him. Also, it sounds to me as if your striver friend "Meghan, 41," is having trouble (like the rest of the shrinking middle class) "getting to the next stage of life" (per Denby's definition of slackerdom). Shouldn't she have already ditched those three roommates and ascended to the coveted 10% echelon in S.F. of those who "own" their own homes? I'd say shes not "striving" hard enough. Any weight your striver vs. slacker argument might have carried dissipates when you inject yourself into the article at the end; you swap your position a la "the Hollywood turnaround". You dont work at destroying the old Newsweek-styled, broadly painted Generation X slacker myth; you buy into it.

December 2007

Sunday, the Yarmouth Fire Department was called to a vehicle fire next to a garage in Barnstable at 4340 Main Street (Route 6A) at the corner of Ryder Road at the Yarmouthport line. Barnstable was on another call and was temporarily unable to respond. The SUV pictured was totally destroyed. Smoke could be seen for several miles. Route 6A was closed for a while due to a hydrant supply line across the road. (Story and photos by R. Copley/CWN).

Hoop Dreams in the Big Easy

Most would use this to argue that the D-backs are a fraud, but you think it's evidence that the team's lights-out bullpen—anchored by 47-save closer Jose Valverde and setup men Juan Cruz, Brandon Lyon, and Tony Pena—helped the team salvage loads of close games. Of course, when your best hitter is Eric Byrnes, you sort of need a good bullpen. If backed into a corner, point out that slugging rookie Chris "I'm Not the Tall Guy Who Pitches for the Padres" Young is always a threat to hit a homer. If people note that Young struck out 141 times and batted .237, confuse them by asking if they're referring to the tall guy who pitches for the Padres.

Historical context: Many fashion experts feel that the Diamondbacks' success can be attributed to the team's offseason decision to change from a calming purple/teal color scheme to a more robust Sedona red.

Coast Guard IDs two who died in capsizing off Oregon coast

HAMMOND, Ore. -- The Coast Guard has identified two men who whose bodies were recovered after a boat crabbing off the northern Oregon coast capsized.

They are 54-year-old James Nibler of Salem and 52-year-old Curtis Heuer of Newberg.

The Coast Guard suspended a six-hour search at nightfall Saturday and had not found a third man: Nibler's 41-year-old brother, Lawrence.

Expected survivability was estimated at four hours.

Bob Coster, search and rescue coordinator at the Coast Guard's Astoria station, says it appears a crab-pot line got tangled on an outboard motor, destabilizing the 16-foot vessel.

The toxic legacy of plastic bags

An unfortunate consequence of this consumer driven shallow society we live in that has supposedly enriched our lives.Funnily enough, its the national broadcaster that publicises these environemental issues for what they are rather than tabloid cheque book journalism mediums of communication you may be used to.

I'd argue that plastic cars have killed more animals (and people) than plastic bags. We should be banning cars. Or is it that you are all too lazy, and are guilty of only considering the economic benefit?

It just peves me when people use nosensical arguements to knock something reasonable that is put forward.Just because cars kill animals (and people) does not mean that the effects of throw-away plastics on the lives of animals does not matter.
