Some old wives' tales are far from true

As long as digestion has begun, you should be fine. Don't, however, combine swimming and eating. You could choke.

Coffee stunts your growth: No, it doesn't. But too much caffeine will have kids climbing the walls.

If you go outside with wet hair, you'll catch a cold: You're likely to be uncomfortable but colds are caused by viruses. People get them more often in winter because they're spread more easily indoors.

Reading in dim light hurts your eyes: Good lighting makes reading easier and prevents eye fatigue but dim light won't hurt you.

Too much TV is bad for your eyes: No, not even if you sit really close (something else mom warned you about). But researchers say kids whose normal weekly routine includes more than 10 hours of TV are more likely to be aggressive, chubby and slower to learn.

Production notes

Even if you don't like comics or superhero films, there's a lot for you in MY SUPER EX-GIRLFRIEND. Don's dialogue was naturalistic, contemporary, sharp -- and funny."

Payne's love for comedy -- evidenced in his work on perhaps the greatest comedy series of all time, "The Simpsons" -- is coupled with what he calls his "pure nerdom."

"I grew up reading a lot of comics, and I love comics to this day, much to my wife's chagrin," Payne says. "It's a nerd fantasy to have a superhero for a girlfriend, and I thought it'd be a fun idea to have a regular guy dating a superhero to disastrous results."

Payne notes that the notion of a super-enabled woman dating a regular guy had been explored previously; the television sitcoms "Bewitched" and "I Dream of Jeannie" are two notable examples.

Does Alan Greenspan Deserve Credit For The Dot Com Bubble Too?

Over the last few months, there's been an increasing finger of blame pointed at Alan Greenspan, suggesting that his policies while running the Fed created the housing bubble which recently burst. However, others are going even further. A new book is suggesting not only is Greenspan responsible for the housing bubble, but he should take credit for the dot com bubble as well. While the book suggests this in a negative manner, as we've pointed out for years, bubbles aren't necessarily a bad thing -- except for the people who got swept up in the hype and invested at the wrong time. Historically, bubbles tend to act as a great driver of innovation by getting a lot of innovative ideas thrown against the wall quickly to see what sticks. While bursting bubbles tend to be painful, the "good" things that come out of them tend to be quite important.

Weeklong Events Promote Healthy Body Image

UCSB Healthy Eating and Living program faculty adviser Joanna Hill said college students are particularly vulnerable to having an eating disorder or acquiring a negative body image.

"Eating disorders usually begin or happen before the age of 25 so the college-aged population is the most likely age to develop an eating disorder," Hill said. "This is the time where one has the highest chance of getting a negative body image, so this is the age where it is important to get the right information on the subject of eating disorders."

Hill also said that the beach location of UCSB and cultural beauty stereotypes that are allegedly prevalent in California may serve as major factors that make UCSB students particularly susceptible to body image issues.

"I think that [the pressure for aesthetic perfection] has a lot to do with the California atmosphere," Hill said.

Bodybuilding.com to match visitors and shoppers with content and ...

Many e-retailers present customers with product recommendations, a cross-selling tactic that suggests products similar or complementary to a product placed in a shopping cart or purchased. Many e-retailers also offer shoppers plenty of content, information on their brand and subject matter in the form of text, audio or video that educates or entertains. Few, however, have combined the two.

Bodybuilding.com LLC is moving in this direction, setting up a system to be launched later this year that studies the on-site browsing behavior and product purchases of customers and presents them with recommendations of articles, videos and even social network members that may be of interest from its vast library of information and BodySpace social network.

Im super pumped up about it and I think it is the key to our future growth, says CEO Ryan DeLuca.

Salty snacks mean more sodas for kids

Kids who load up on salty meals and snacks get thirsty, and too often they turn to calorie-filled sodas. So maybe cutting back on the salt is a good way to cut the calories. That's the idea coming from a British study published Wednesday in an American Heart Association journal.

Salt is "a hidden factor in the obesity epidemic," said Graham MacGregor, a co-author of the study by researchers at St. George's University of London.

And researchers say all that salt isn't coming from the salt shaker: About 80 percent comes from manufactured food.

"Most people think that sodium comes from the salt shaker. The salt shaker contributes less than 10 to 15 percent," said Dr. Myron Weinberger, a professor of medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine.

"Fast foods, for example, are just loaded with sodium.

U.S. candidates get set for 2 crucial primaries

All of us are trying to find the one third we relate to best. We are disappointed by running into the two thirds that most confuse us if not annoy us. Everyone knows these candidates are either sociopaths, vampires or sychophants. People need to vote their conscience if they still have their claim ticket to get it out of the pawn shop. For sure two thirds of us will be disappointed with the results of the 2008 election.

Cuban comfort food in a slow cooker

We love slow-cooker recipes that don't require us to cook anything on top of the stove. We want to throw everything into the pot, walk away and return home after a long day to a comforting, amazing dinner.

The trick is knowing which types of recipes slow-cook to perfection without prior searing or sautéing. Enter today's recipe, a new take on a Cuban classic called ropa vieja. A traditional ropa vieja spends several hours on top of the stove, but the dish meets our requirements for an easy slow-cooker transformation:

It's brothy, essentially a stew at heart.

It's seasoned aggressively, meaning the recipe doesn't rely on a browned-beef flavor.
